Doing laundry is boring and time-consuming, but it is not exactly rocket science. Anyone can learn how to do it. However, there’s a lot that can go wrong, and one small mistake may completely ruin some of your favorite articles of clothing. You don’t want that to happen to your delicate clothes, do you? Especially considering that these delicates are the most expensive pieces of your wardrobe. Lightweight fabrics such as silk, velvet, chiffon, moire, ninon, lace, and fine kits are extremely sensitive. Their flexible and pliable structure makes them much more liable to wear and tear and laundry damage. That’s why these fabrics are categorized as delicates and require extra care during the laundry process – known as delicate wash. Don’t worry! You won’t have to hire a professional housekeeping service to get this job done. Like we said: anyone can do it. In this article, we will give you 4 amazing tips that will help you wash all your delicates properly.

1. Read the labels!

If you’re not sure how to wash a certain piece of clothing, check the label and read it carefully. After all, that’s why they are there. Or better yet, even if you think you know what the best washing method is, check the label anyway – it might stop you from making a huge mistake. It’s important to know that all items labeled as “dry clean only” must be taken to a professional laundry facility. If you attempt to wash them at home, you might damage or wear out the fabric.

2. How to hand wash delicates the right way?

Washing delicate clothes by hand is a lot of work: you have to be patient and use slow and smooth movements. But it’s also the safest way to do it. Grab two clean containers (one for washing and the other one for rinsing) and start sorting all the dirty delicates you need to wash into light and dark pieces, just like you would do in your regular laundry routine. Fill the containers with either cold or warm water, grab the detergent, and roll up your sleeves. Specialized commercial products such as Woolite and Soak are among the best detergents for handwashing delicates. Some people might find them unnecessarily expensive and are not willing to spend that much money on that type of product. If you are one of these people, you can make your cleaning solution at home. Simply mix one cup of hot water with one teaspoon of shampoo for babies. It might not be as effective, but it will be close enough. Add a tiny bit of detergent to the water, submerge your delicate clothes, and gently swirl them. Do it until they look completely clean – it might take about five minutes or so.
