5 Ways You’re Damaging Your Washer/Dryer And Should Stop ASAP!

Last Updated on December 13, 2019

If you let lint accumulate on your dryer, typically on its screen, it will reduce its drying efficiency and airflow and cause mold to grow and nobody wants that.

If you’re not sure what lint is, it’s the accumulation of textile fibers that are found on clothes. Not cleaning your dryer’s lint filter after every cycle reduces its drying efficiency and may lead to an overheated motor which is a fire hazard.

Here is how to clean out the lint: Remove the lint screen, remove the lint buildup from it, and soak it in hot water for several minutes to remove any residue. Be sure to dust the lint trap properly before placing the lint screen back.

#4 – You put things that don’t belong in the washer

It has happened to us all. You throw a pair of jeans into the washing machine and it ends up washing the loose change you left in the pocket as well. Oops!

But it’s more than “oops” you should be saying, because those little coins can cause major damage to your washing machine beyond repair as they swim around and hit the fins on the drain pump throughout the entire cycle.

That is why it’s recommended that you empty all the pockets in your clothes before putting them in the washer and avoid washing some items there.

Here are some common items that could easily damage your washing machine:

-Embellished clothes.

-Unzipped zippers.

-Large zippers.

-Clothes with inflammable stains (from gasoline/alcohol).

-Purses.

-Heavy blankets/king-sized comforters.

#5 – Why don’t you clean the dryer vent?

You should clean out your dryer vent from debris to maintain the dryer’s efficiency and good performance and prevent any disasters since blocked vents can cause carbon monoxide to push into the dryer instead of outside of it which may cause a fire.

Thoroughly clean the exhaust vent once or twice a year, depending on the size of your household. First, unplug the dryer, clean the moisture sensors located under the dryer’s door, clean the lint screen, and vacuum inside the dryer drum to get rid of dust.

Be careful with detergent, clean out your dryer and washer properly as often as you can, and avoid overloading them or putting harmful items, for the sake of your own safety and the longevity of your washing machine!
