#7 – Pillows

If you’re curious about how to wash your memory foam pillows, the best way is always reading the care instructions on the pillow and when in doubt hand-wash them in a tub or sink full of lukewarm water and a little bit of detergent.

After it’s completely washed, remove the excess water and finally, just let it dry in a spot with good air circulation, near a window or you can turn on a fan next to it. You shouldn’t wash them in the washing machine because the strong agitation will break up the padding and weaken the pillow.

Even the gentle cycle on your washing machine will turn your memory foam pillow into a mess.

#8 – Fabrics Heavily Stained With Flammable Fluids

How to ruin a washing machine? Well, you should definitely avoid it but if you’re wondering, the worst thing you could do is tossing into the washing machine fabrics that are excessively stained with flammable fluids like alcohol, lighter fluid, or gasoline. It can combust and cause a house fire!

Instead, you should hand-wash the items on your sink or tub with some heavy-duty detergent. Hence, it’s important that you remove this flammable substance from clothes before putting them on the washing machine. I know it takes more time and work but you’d be avoiding a big dangerous mess.

Even if you mess up when washing your clothes, know that it’s fine, everyone in this world already had a piece of clothing ruined by a washing machine. You won’t be the first or the last.

Just remember that there are really dangerous items that could literally put you in danger but in most cases, you’ll just end up with shrunken, stained or just completely ruined clothes.

One more tip: Don’t forget to always empty your pockets (pun intended). Coins can be deadly to washing machines.

Those little pieces of metal might seem harmless, but coins in the washing machine can damage the fins on the drain pump if they make it past the filter, they can also get stuck in a drainpipe and block it so the water doesn’t drain or they might even shatter the glass of a front-loading washer.

Or, a worst-case scenario they can seriously damage the drum and puncture the outer tank, and yes, it would cost a lot of money to fix it So don’t forget to check your pockets before you throw your pants in the washing machine!
