Whether you have been using a washing machine forever or you just started being independent, meaning: your own housewife and want to learn how to use a washing machine you should be familiar with the list of things you should never put in a washing machine.

Sure, doing the laundry might seem simple, you just throw it all in, add some detergent, press a button, wait a couple of minutes and it’s done, right? Nope. You can actually damage your washing machine or your favorite piece of clothing by making one wrong move.

But don’t worry too much! Here you have a list of all the things that could potentially damage your machine or your self-confidence in your independence skills.

#1 – Swimwear

What should you never put in a washing machine? Well, the first thing is swimwear. Yes, swimsuits are designed to hold up the water, however, swimsuits and washing machines don’t go together. Putting your swimsuit on the washing machine can make it lose elasticity, and nobody wants to wear a grandma bikini right? Hand-washing is definitely the best option, and you should do it right after you use them to remove salt, sunscreen, and sweat from the fibers.

#2 – Neckties

Neckties are those items you use to formal occasions, so you probably want them to always look their best, pro tip: take them to the dry cleaner.

Most neckties when they go on the washing machine, they’re not the same after. They get ugly and deformed. Also, neckties aren’t that cheap so you’d better re-think your washing options!

#3 – Items Covered In Pet Hair

It’s such fun having pets and playing with them until you look at the incredible amount of hair they leave on your clothes, couch, and overall house.

And just like your hair, pet hair can also clog a bathroom sink, shower drain or the washing machine drains. Pet hair is the worse for the water pump filters and drains. Try your best to remove pet hair beforehand so you can avoid this. Use a lint roller or some tape and get to work!

#4 – “Special” Clothing

Clothings that contain jewels or sequins are way too delicate to handle washing machines. I’m sure you really love those embellishments on your shirt and you would be devastated if they just came off. Again, dry cleaning is the best option, because even hand-washing can damage these special clothes.

#5 – Bras

I know this might be a surprise, yes you can wash your bras in the washing machine, however, if you don’t want to buy more bras in the near future you should definitely hand wash them, Why?

Look at it like this: every bra no matter how good or expensive it is, can get stretched out when you wash them in a washing machine, even your victoria secret bra will get damaged over time, not to mention that an unfastened bra hook can easily get caught in the machine’s cylinder or agitator. Hand-wash your bras so they’ll last longer.

#6 – Sport Shoes

Canvas sneakers like converse are totally fine to toss into your washing machine, on the other hand running or sports sneakers are definitely not compatible with washing machines.

If you enjoy having your sneakers looking fresh and good, avoid putting them on the washing machine, it could transform your expensive Nike or Adidas sneakers into deformed, ugly and not comfortable to run in shoes.

You should always check the label first and choose to hand-wash your shoes using cool water when in doubt.
