#1 – Keep your food in food jail

This is kind of an aggressive term to refer to a BPA-free plastic container, but it’s also your best alternative to make sure you don’t have bugs in your cereal, your rice or your lentils. A tight-locking lid will imprison your food “bug proof”.

This is a cabinet hack, but do not forget about your trash. Try to use sealed receptacles when disposing of your garbage in order to keep away bugs or other unwanted animals, like cute but nasty raccoons.

#2 – You better not spill

Do not let crumbs on the ground or spilled milk laying around. After eating, clean up the surface and make sure you don’t leave anything behind – use a sponge and soapy water, and keep that sponge clean as well. The same goes for your floor – avoid leaving crumbs behind. Why?

Because one man’s trash is an insect’s treasure, and they will come and get those crumbs, and when you least expect it you will have a party of small bugs in the kitchen.

#3 – Empty your cupboards and clean them

Your cupboards should be emptied on a regular basis and then cleaned with water and soap. Cleaning your cupboard will guarantee that there are no bugs living on the inside.

Also, while tidying up your pantry check the packaging to see if everything is good with expiration dates and to see if the packaging is still intact.

#4 – Do not leave fruits and veggies out for long

Some people buy fake fruit to decorate their tables because of how nice it looks, but a bowl filled with fresh fruit, real fruit, is even more amazing. Fruits are an amazing healthy alternative to eat as a snack or after a meal, it makes your house smell good and it makes for a pretty centerpiece.

But if fruits or vegetables are left out for too long, it can attract fruit bugs. How to get rid of these annoying bugs? Don’t let them show up in the first place. Try to make sure the fruit is not too ripe and maybe store it in the refrigerator.

If the fruit bugs have gotten to your fruit, and in a worst-case scenario, if the fruit bugs are fruit flies, dispose of that food on the outside, since they lay hundreds of eggs and it would be unsanitary to keep that rotten fruit in your house.

You should never use bug spray for this specific scenario, so a mix of apple cider vinegar and dish soap is the perfect homemade kitchen bug spray (that is actually not a spray)– the vinegar will attract the flies and the soap will pull them into the water, where they will drown.

#5 – Work out some home improvements

Every house needs maintenance, so maybe try to fix the hidden cracks that will let critters sneak into your house, seal your stove and seal the openings on your water pipes – pests don’t let these small details go unnoticed and they will find their way in. Make sure your garbage disposal is always clean because garbage is a paradise for some bugs.
