Your freezer is not organized

The first thing you need to do when it comes to taking care of your freezer is trying to keep it as organized as possible. It is not an easy task, I know because, with the too many bags, we tend to pile them up and stuff them into the freezer with no reason or rhyme.

This is why some foods will end up pushed to the back of your freezer, forgotten, and perhaps even rotten. Try to add freezer shelves and bins to keep everything visible and accessible, it will even ease the process of taking out the food without making more mess.

Too warm

If you want to keep food for a longer period of time, then the colder you make it, the better. So make sure to adjust the temperature accordingly to your food plans, and try to make it as cold as possible.

In order to know if you are doing it right, you can test the temperature by using the fridge thermometer, and as long as it is 0°F or less, then it is perfect.

In case your freezer became way too cold that even your ice cream became as hard as a rock, then you can store the food you’d need in its door (the warmest part), or put them in a ziplock to help it stay softer.

The food is not sealed properly

In order to protect your food from developing ‘freezer burn’, then you have to keep all the air out!

Press aluminum foil, plastic wrap, or ziplock bags as close as possible to the food you are freezing. In case you were using a sturdy container, then try to fill it to the top while giving just a little room for the food to expand when it freezes.

Don’t forget to toss the remaining food in a ziplock bag beforehand when you are putting the packaged foods into the freezer again.

Freezing stuff together

You should never freeze different food items in the bag or container directly (burger patties, berries, cookie dough, etc), or you will end up with a big frozen food block – This will not be helpful when you try to take out a small amount.

You need to freeze all of your foods on a baking sheet first, then transfer them to the ziplock freezer bag. If you tried freezing things separately first, then you will never have to deal with the problem of having them all stick together.

Freezing foods that are going bad

Here is a random fact: freezing does help preserve food, but it will never restore its freshness. If you tried freezing a muffin that almost went bad, then expect it to taste bad after freezing it.
