How to Survive a Fall from Great Heights

Last Updated on April 5, 2019

The first question that may come to your mind is ‘what’s the height someone can fall from without dying?’ especially that even a plummet from the 1st floor can have terrible consequences (let alone one from more than 30,000 ft).

Yet, a flight attendant named Vesna Vulovic survived a fall from 33,000 ft after her plane was blown up due to a terrorist attack. Surprisingly enough, after enduring serious injuries, she bravely returned to work as a flight attendant again. So, if you fall, boosting your chances for survival is not impossible.

 When falling, try to hold onto anything you may find to reduce your speed a little bit and break the fall in a few intervals. (If you’re lucky, there’ll be a canopy on your way.)
 Although it may seem ridiculous, just try to relax your muscles as much as possible when falling. No matter what you do, don’t tense them up.

In fact, drunk people and babies have the highest chances of surviving a fall. Not being fully aware of what’s going on keep the muscles relaxed and switches off panic. Small kids, in particular, survive thanks to their softer bones and their skull which is likely to deform than crack once the body hits the ground.

 Slightly bend your knees while holding your legs together. This will make the impact weaker as your legs will touch the ground simultaneously. Also, try to land on the tips of your toes to absorb the impact’s force. Chances are you’ll end up with broken legs, but you’ll survive!

 Put your arms around your head to protect it from the impact, also, try to fall on your side.

 Do not land on straight legs.
 Do not spread your legs apart.
 Do not land on one leg because it won’t help you save the other.
 If you survived, do not move, stay still and wait for help.
